Lisa's Daylily Garden

We offer a very special scholarship for Woodridge High School students. Funded by sales made from Lisa's Daylily Garden, this scholarship is awarded to students involved in international study programs. Lisa Badger was a special family friend who loved gardening, international travel, and children. When Lisa passed away Carol started Lisa's garden in her memory. The scholarship has been awarded to students who have traveled to Australia, Italy, France, and Denmark.

Daylilies – The Perfect Perennial!

Daylilies have often been called the perfect perennial and here are a few of the reasons why.

  • They are very hearty, thousands of cultivars do very well through our Ohio winters.
  • They grow in most soils, including our good old northeast Ohio clay.
  • They are drought resistant, but they do exceptionally well when lovingly watered.
  • They are generally insect and disease resistant.
  • Not only do they come back every year but they multiply too.
  • They are easy to plant and divide.
  • Color choices include reds, whites, purples, pinks, yellows, oranges and many daylilies are available that bloom in wonderful combinations of colors.
  • Height ranges go from 11 inches to 5 feet, but most are in the 18 inch to 28 inch range.
  • Bloom times range from late May and early June through early October in years when fall is warm.

Daylilies were first appreciated and cultivated in China over 4000 years ago. They made their way to Europe in the 1500s most likely on overland trade caravans returning from the Far East. It is generally believed that the first introduction of the daylily into the United States did not occur until the second half of the 1800s during the Victorian era.

It wasn’t until after the roaring 1920s that daylily fever really struck in North America. Botanists and amateur gardeners alike found the daylily to be a relatively easy flower to hybridize. From less than 20 "original" species of daylilies we have developed over 40,000 named cutilvars. Daylilies have been hybridized to create an amazing variety of size, shape, color, form, and height. It is a tribute to the ever growing popularity of daylily is that most of the explosion of new cultivars has come in just the last three decades of the century.

In the gardens of Heritage Farms Lilies in The Valley™ you will find over 335 cultivars, about 325 of them will be for sale in the 2005 summer season.

With distinct color choices, heights, and bloom times you can do a lot of garden designing. Visit us here at the farm and we will help you through the selection details, discuss your garden plan and even show you how to plant your daylilies.

Check out our bloom page to see some of our fine daylilies and the price list with cultivar characteristic details here on our web site. Then come to the farm and see what they look like in a garden setting. All daylily sales are made at the family farm. We do not ship daylilies.
